Grow faster than anybody

This marks my 11 year after coming back from the United States, and 8 years being as an CEO.

Over these years, I have experienced many things and encountered various challenges. The environment has changed significantly, and so has the team. Some members have become executives within a few years of joining, and many senior members have been replaced.

But I believe I am the one who has grown the most during this time as CEO. If I had known from the beginning, I would have avoided unnecessary expenses and focused on defensive management. However, now my approach is aggressive. Even if it means spending money, I aim for greater rewards. I have gradually learned to discern when to be conservative and when to be aggressive. I have also started setting ambitious goals aimed at significant breakthroughs, rather than just incremental improvements.


These are things I could not have done in the past. Even as a CEO, I am still an eight-year-old elementary school student in my journey. I need to continue gaining experiences and grow more than anyone else. But it is because of the detours, confusion, and progress I have made that I can now see the path ahead and have the strength to follow it.

This is all thanks to everyone who has been with me, sharing the challenges, thinking, acting, creating excellent products, and providing excellent services.

Facing Fear and Seeking Growth

 Some of you may already know this, but I make it a habit to read 10 to 15 books every month. It’s not so much a hobby—rather, I feel uneasy if I’m not constantly exposing myself to new ideas, disciplining my mind, and learning with hunger and intention. It might sound unpleasant to some, but in reality, having a strict boss or senior colleague who constantly tells you, “This is not good enough!” is a privilege. I don’t have that in my current position. No one tells me what’s right or wrong. And even if someone did, their “right” isn’t necessarily my right. What is the "Kinoko Management" style for Hattori??

 As the season for warm, hearty meals approaches, mushrooms— kinoko in Japanese—frequently appear in dishes like hot pots. I personally love maitake mushrooms, although “mushroom” is how we refer to them in English. Interestingly, we intentionally call our management style Kinoko Management in English as well, keeping the unique essence of this concept. Mushrooms are not vegetables but fungi. Their defining role is in promoting decomposition, enabling the cycle of life to continue. What we see above ground—the mushrooms themselves—is just the tip of the iceberg.
