Facing Criticism as a Leader
Are you afraid of criticism?
I wish I could say I’m not, but like many, I also prefer to avoid it.
However, as a leader, avoiding criticism is not an option. Leaders must take actions that can transform organizations and society, even if it invites criticism. Excuses do not inspire or lead to meaningful impact.
Why? Because any change creates winners and losers. Some will benefit, while others may feel they are at a loss.
As the CEO of Hattori Group, my strength is staying firm on what I believe is right, even in the face of criticism. But this also brings a weakness—concentration of power. Without proper governance, it can be risky, much like extending leadership indefinitely, as seen in some world leaders.
A leader who fears criticism and avoids action cannot drive change. At the same time, ignoring everyone’s input and becoming a dictator doesn’t help either. Balance is essential, and timing is key.
When circumstances demand improvement and growth, strong leadership is needed. At times, bold, even forceful action is necessary to execute plans. Organizations or nations that cannot take such steps inevitably decline. On the other hand, when things are stable or improving, creating systems and structures adds long-term value. In such cases, management and teamwork are crucial.
It’s okay for most us to avoid criticism. But for certain people, courage to speak up without fear is vital to bring positive changes. If those suggestions aim to benefit the team, company, customers, or society—not just personal gain—they can spark meaningful action. Change may not happen instantly, but every step connects to future success.
Though I’m leader of my company, I’m still just one person in society. While I maybe able to change a little, doing so can bring positive changes to society. I cannot do it alone; your actions as individuals create ripples of good for everyone.
Each of you matters greatly. Your thoughts and actions have a significant role in shaping our society and future. 😊
